It’s common, and it’s almost always architectural. The usual suspects: Place Details requests pulling Pro or Enterprise tier fields when Essentials fields would render the same UI, Autocomplete implementations that break session billing and pay per keystroke, matrix calls whose element counts multiply origins by destinations, and traffic sitting on legacy APIs with less favorable mechanics. A usage audit maps every SKU on the bill to a feature in your product. Whatever doesn’t map to user value gets engineered out.
Google designated those APIs as legacy in March 2025, with the newer Places API and Routes API as their successors. Migration is a request and response mapping exercise plus a billing model change, and the billing change is where teams get surprised: the new APIs introduce field masks and different SKU structures that can move your costs meaningfully in either direction. We scope the mapping, model the cost delta before you migrate, and sequence the cutover so nothing user-facing breaks.
Yes, and it’s one of our most common starting points. Your team’s implementation usually works fine. The review looks at what it costs to work: API selection against the current catalog, session and field mask usage, caching opportunities, quota configuration, and exposure to legacy deprecations.
